Something ate my Weigela, leaving only one small shoot. What can I safely use to discourage this critter?

If it's rabbits, you'll usually see them when they forage for food in early morning and again at dusk. It would be helpful if you were able to positively identify whatever ate your Weigela and then take appropriate action.
