I received a ready to plant kit. It says I have to soak the roots in water several hours before planting. Is this necessary? Can I plant this tree in a pot?

I would follow the planting instructions that were included with your tree.
Soaking bare roots is a general recommendation and helps to hydrate and wake up the roots.
