Pruning or Trimming Gardenia Bushes

Question

when and how much should the bush be trimmed down? The bush that I have is tall but has no shape and the limbs are mostly bare except for a few leaves at the top. There are at least 15 to 20 buds on it in May and has bloomed once last year.
