Pruning Gardenia Bushes

Question

I live in southwest Florida and need to know when to prune my gardenias. They were trained to grow as small trees when I purchased them a couple of years ago. They are getting out of shape, but I’m reluctant to prune them as they seem to continually have a bloom here and there. I understand that if pruned at the wrong time, they will not bloom.
