I need to plant perennials or evergreen climbers in an area that gets very little sun. I live in west of Ireland.
I would suggest English or Variegated Ivy, or Creeping Myrtle for shady areas. Both are evergreen and are great to help with soil erosion, too. Ivy is very hardy, and it can be simply pulled from an existing area. Pay attention to the tiny roots that grow in several areas along the vine, and using some small rocks, you may weigh the areas that you have planted down. Water well until established. Avoid planting ivy around a tree, as it will take over and kill the tree. Ivy will propogate itself and multiplies profusely, so it is not well to plant other plants in its growing area. It will crowd out most any other plants if left to grow.
Creeping Myrtle is a great for areas that get little sun, and it will produce a purple flower in early spring.Be careful, though, as it has been said that it will escape to the woods??? (i read this is in a flower catalouge). Anyway, it is good to remain evergreen during winter months, and it is known to control soil erosion.
