How do I get my pH balanced for my gardenia that is planted in a pot?

Before you balance the soil, you should make sure that the pH is off. You will need to do a soil test for this. The pH should be between 5.0 and 6.5 for gardenias. If the pH is too high, a little vinegar will help to lower it. If the pH is too low, you can add some lime to the soil.
