Q.Outdoor Yucca Plant

Do I need certain soil or fertilizer for my yucca plant? I have had it for years and it doesn’t seem to grow tall. I have had a cutting from it, which was doing alright but now all its leaves have turned brownish and drooped. I have another outside my back door, which I can separate but am afraid the same thing may happen.
