Q.Our Minneola Tangelo Has Produced Foliage But So Far No Blooms.

Zone El Cajon, CA., 92020 | David Kendall added on May 3, 2020 | Answered

It is May 1st, inland San Diego Co. and so far foliage has fully leafed out, but no blooms. The tree is over 50 years old and produced good fruit last year. It has been neglected for many years other than occasional summer watering that has kept it alive. Last year it was regularly watered and we received over 18″ of rain in 2019/20. The tree had some curling and blackening of the leaf edges last year. Almost all of the fruit has been picked so far this year.. Should we expect blooms later, or is this an off year? Or other explanation. Also, how long do these trees live? Thank you.

Generally, 40 or 50 years will be expected. They tend to decline, suddenly, seemingly. It will be time to look into replacing the tree.
