what is the problem when a seeming ly healthy ordchis stalk is cut placed in water and then it just fails? I have cymbium orchids.

Water my not be going into the stem. Try cutting the stem underwater; then place in a vase with clean water.
Purchase floral preservative to add to the water to keep the flowers fresh longer.
