Q.New Tree Question

Zone Long Island, NY | Anonymous added on July 19, 2021 | Answered

Hello, I am still learning my way around my garden and yard. This tree was planted two years ago and is still young. It’s a flowering plum Tree. Should I be trimming these areas at the bottom off? Also, is it a must that I put new mulch every year around the base?

I would keep all of these "suckers" at the base pruned off. They will sap nutrients from the existing tree, so you don't want them around.

Mulching can help, unless your area gets a lot of rainfall. If this is the case, I would not mulch.
