Q.Need Urgent Help/advice For My Dying Ponytail Palm

Zone Kushtia, Bangladesh | Anonymous added on August 5, 2024 | Answered

Sir/Madam, first of all good wishes for you. Hope you are doing great. My ponytail palm was submerged in water for 10 days about 2 months ago. So I repotted it with normal clay soil mixed with a little amount of cow dung manure, urea and potash fertilizer in a clay pot about a month ago without cutting or spreading the root bound. But all the leaves of my plant are getting yellow and brown severely for last 3 weeks. After seeing this, I’ve cut the brown part of the leaves. Yet top of the leaves are starting yellow and brown again. The caudex of my plant is getting black day by day. This new pot doesn’t have well drainage, I sort it out later. So what should I do now? Should I keep the plant as it is now or repot again? I’m a little bit concerned about repot because I’ve done this just a month ago, whether repotting now could be harmful and stressful for my plant. I’ll be very grateful if you share or give me some tips or suggestion in this regard. Your kind suggestions will be very helpful both for me and my plant. 😊

I suggest repotting it in fresh, well draining soil in a pot that has at least one drainage hole, preferably more. The clay soil is too heavy for it and it doesn't need a lot of fertilizer, which may be burning the leaves. When you get it out of the pot, rinse the soil off the roots and clip off any that look like they may be rotting. The soil could be a commercial mix for cacti and succulents, or you can mix your own with one half potting soil and the rest a mix of perlite, sand, and shredded bark. Here is more:
