I’ve had ants all over my young Rose of Sharon this summer. But a few weeks ago I began seeing black flecks of something all over the flowers. What is this (see photos)? And what can I do to get rid of it/prevent it in the future. Thanks!

The pictures are too far away to accurately identify the pests but aphids are a common pest of Rose of Sharon,. they can be black and they leave a sugary excrement called honeydew that ants love.
