Q.My wisteria has gotten out of hand – how do I safely get it under control?

I have it planted at an arbor and it has filled that up and is growing about 3 ft above it. I have considered cutting back at the main stems – will it send out new shoots that I can train on the arbor by attaching them and then keep pruning so I have just these shoots instead of hundreds?

This is a common concern with wisteria. Here are the instructions. It can be pruned in winter and summer - about 2 months after blooming.
