You must have an everbearing or day-neutral variety that blooms and fruits all season. As soon as the area experiences weather below 40 degrees F (4.4 C), they will go dormant. You can mulch them well after the leaves flatten in preparation for cold weather. Some people just keep day-neutral varieties for a year, but some keep them a second year.
