Q.My Magnolia Tree Has Either A Pest Or A Infection On The Trunk And Big Limbs
I have noticed that the 45 year old Magnolia tree in my yard has either a pest or a infection on the trunk and big limbs. It looks like patches of dirt however when you scrape off a piece it feels like a moss. I have tried to scrape off has much as possible. Also the base of the trunk has peeled and cracked in one spot. What is this and what can I do about it. I don’t want to lose this tree. Thanks

There are several possibilities. I included links to information below. You may want to consult an arborist or the local university extension agent for more help.
