Any browning at all will indicate that something is wrong. Typically, this is fungal or bacterial, but many cause these symptoms. To me, this looks most like stylar end rot. This will have to be treated by fungicides. This crop will not be salvageable, but treating and removing any dead and rotting tissue from the area can make next year a little better.
