Q.My angel hydrangea which grows from new stalks has gotten huge but no blooms. The last three years I would get one bloom but this
year none. What do I need to do? I don’t cut back the dead stalks until the new growth starts and I fertilize in fall and doing. We’ve had an abundance of rain this spring and summer and extremely cold nights in winter. I’m in VA.
With some varieties of hydrangea, any more cold than usual will prohibit flowering. Depending on your fertilizer, there could be too much nitrogen, or not enough potassium and phosphorous. This will also prevent flowering.
