The appearance of mulch after deterioration and the time required will depend on the material it's made from. Mulch made of large particles (like coarse wood mulch) will take longer to decompose than mulch made of small particles (like finely chopped wood mulch or pine needle mulch). There is also mulch made from materials like rubber, but it's not a good idea to let these deteriorate in your garden.
