Q.Much And Compost For Roses

Zone Cave Creek | Cammy9 added on March 13, 2021 | Answered

Is compost absolutely necessary for roses? Is mulch absolutely necessary for roses? I have a double delight rose. I live in the AZ USA desert. I have it in a pot that drains well with rich soil and an irrigation system. I feed it Miracle Gro all purpose plant food. I have no mulch or compost currently. What should I do about mulch and compost? Thank you.

Mulch would be a good addition since you are in a hot, dry climate. Mulch will help cool the soil and roots and will slowly decompose to help condition the soil. Mulch also helps retain moisture, so you don't have to water as much. It also helps to prevent weeds.

The compost isn't necessary since you already feed your roses.
