Q.Miscanthus X Giganteus Not Growing
Hi, I live in a Zone 5b and planted about four Miscanthus X Giganteus last spring. They did well, but did not come up as of mid July this year. So I dug them up. Soil temps were well above tolerance levels for it to start sending up shoots. So July 14th, I dug them up. I was really surprised to see the roots were alive and growing quite thick and healthy. But NO grass shoots! No rhizomes either, just a woody root ball that were brown with a white interior. These were small 1st year plants but got about 2 1/2 feet last year. My question is WHY are the roots healthy on ALL plants but NO grass shoots with summer waning towards August???

It doesn't sound like the roots are alive. You are right on the verge of hardiness so if your plants were in an unprotected area, they likely froze. Also, if the soil is very clayey or rocky, the plants may have been slow to establish.
