Mexican Sunflower Plants

Q.Mexican sunflowers are, one-by-one, starting to wilt and die

I started about 2 dozen from seed, set them about 2 weeks ago at 6-8 inches. Now some are wilting and dying, 3 so far.

It could be from a burrowing animal or a fungal disease such as verticillium wilt.
