Anonymous added on February 28, 2013 | Answered

I am repotting my Boston fern. I thought that other times I wrapped root ball with them.

This is normal. Usually I just stuff them in with the rest of the rootball. In nature, these "rhizomes" will travel up to 2 feet and establish a new crown. If you've ever had a Boston escape and let it do it's thing, you will see why ferns make a great ground cover in shady moist loose soils.
