Landscaping

Question

We have a 40 yr. old Ranch house. The front faces north. There is a garden area from the left corner to the front steps, then a hedge of shrubs form the right side of the steps to the right corner. Pine trees on the right make it shady on the lawn. The landscaping is old looking. What can I do to make it more appealing?
