Japanese Purple Sweet Potato Propagation

Question

I put 2 potato in water. They are producing tons of slips. On the same day I placed 2 potato in soil. On their sides correctly. I see roots. NO GROWTH at all. The potatoes seem to be getting small holes and even looking like may be rotting. HELP. Why s the soil method not working. They are in two different pans also. I live in sunny South Florida
