Q.Is It Possible (or Even A Good Idea) To Renewal Prune 20+yr. Old Boxwood To About 4′ In Height?

Zone 22627 | ddpprf added on September 25, 2020 | Answered

Sorry, I don’t have a photo, this boxwood has not been well attended in as many such years, it is leggy, about 10′ or so in height and about 3′ across (at bottom) further spread at top, sparse interior growth (no green). It was suggested to me to do it in one cut, earlier this summer, but I was a bit skeptical to go that way. I’m not sure I would even know where to begin to start. Any help/direction would be appreciated. Thanks!

Rejuvenation pruning on boxwoods should be done in stages over a few years, if possible. Severely cutting back boxwoods at one time can kill the shrub.
