Irish Moss

Irish Moss and Moles

Zone North Beach, Maryland | Mamamia added on October 7, 2016 | Answered

A couple weeks ago I noticed a tunnel in my garden and going around my Irish moss which is about 20 inches round. I carefully patted down the raised part but now it is turning brown. Should I dig the whole thing up and replant or remove the dying part? I hate to lose this beauty.

Make sure the damaged part's roots are fully in contact with the soil. You may have to move away the mulch and add some new soil underneath to give it an easier time getting established again, while leaving the healthy part in contact with the soil. If the damaged part doesn't recover, you can also propagate Irish moss by division and use the new growth to fill in gaps.
