If I sow onion seeds now will the seeds survive the winter?

I have a 18ft X 30ft Polytunnel here in the Isle of Man.
I was thinking of sowing some onion seeds now and planting out the seedlings in a raised bed in the polytunnel in the same way as you would if using sets.
Will this work?

It depends upon the type of onion you want to plant and your weather conditions. Different varieties require differing hours of sunshine to grow well.
