I Recently Purchased And Planted A Minnesota Mock Orange. How Can I Determine It If Is Alive Or Dead, Please?

The stems are strong and do not break. However, I am hesitant to bend them very hard. When should I see signs of life in this plant? I have wanted a Mock Orange since my husband and I lived in a little old farm house years ago. I enjoyed the one someone had planted years ago (probably in the early 1900s). I would appreciate any assistance you could give me. Thank you.
