Also – leaves have areas being eaten away. If I use a insecticide, which is absorbed by the plant, how long do I have to wait till I can eat the figs?

Harvesting your figs can be done as soon as the fruit is softening. Figs are not tasty until they are ripe, so you will need to let them stay on the tree until fully ripe. When the fruit starts to turn color and gives slightly when squeezed, it will be ready to harvest.

Treat the tree with a pesticide like neem oil, as it is organic and food safe. Simply wash off the fruit as usual and eat. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/pesticides/neem-oil-uses.htm
