I am a novice gardener and I’m willing to try another potted plant.

You can put the used soil in a compost pile or fill in holes in the yard. It may well contain disease and insects that may rear up again with a new plant. New plants need fresh, healthy soil, so I don't recommend re-using the soil unless you sterilize it. Here's an article that will help with that: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/soil-fertilizers/sterilizing-soil.htm
