Q.How to rid garden of horsetail weed
I have an infestation of horsetail weed on the west side of my house. I believe it was brought in with some mulch obtained free (from the town) bad idea!!
I have read many conflicting recommendations. I do not want to use roundup if at all possible as I have cats and dogs that are outside. I have tried pulling and digging over and over, but it hasn’t seemed to slow it down and in some areas have made it worse. I was considering covering with thick plastic for a couple of seasons. Has anyone had any luck with that?

This one is difficult. Like ferns, these reproduce by spore, which are microscopic and carried by the wind. Once it is introduced somewhere, it should be considered a permanent installment, and it will spread. The best thing will be to control it when it is young.
The method you have described of solarizing the soil is one method of treatment. This article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/horsetail/horsetail-weed-control.htm
