Q.How do I plant large pups (4-5′ tall) that have no roots that were cut from a large mature sago?
We have been keeping the huge pups in water for a week and want to get them in the ground. Do I need to use something like root tone before putting them in the amended mixture of potting soil/sand/peat moss? We have very rocky, alkaline soil her in the Texas hill country.

It is best to twist and pull from the parent plant, as cutting will almost always create a wound that will not heal properly. These can take quite a while to root, and they need drier conditions to root.
