Q.How Do I Kill Grass Around An Established Plant Without Killing The Plant?

Zone Fort Wayne, IN | Anonymous added on February 26, 2021 | Answered

I had planted some boxwoods and burning bushes in my yard but did not do mulch or stones around the base. Grass has since grown in and it’s very difficult to mow around.

We don't make product recommendations but there is a product that will kill grass around and in ornamentals but the ornamental needs to be listed on the label.

Another option is using a nonselective grass killer with glyphosate and protecting the shrubs with a large piece of cardboard while you spray. If you accidentally get spray on your shrub, immediately wash the affected area with water or pinch off that stem.

If you don't want to use chemicals, you can cover the grassy areas with cardboard or several sheets of newspaper, moisten, then top with compost and several inches of bark mulch. It should eventually kill out the grass.
