This is not a sprayer I fill & can check. It is one I bought with chemicals already in it.

Yes, it's possible for those sprayers to malfunction. Check the attachments prior to filling.
If it isn't working properly I would recommend replacing.
I actually use mine for a few seasons and then replace.
It's more inexpensive to replace a plastic sprayer then to replace the fertilizers.
