Brown spots can occur due to improper watering, fungal disease, too much sun, or root rot. Make sure you let the soil dry out between waterings. If you think it is a nutrient problem, repot the plant in fresh soil. Too much fertilizer can result in fertilizer burn, which causes brown spots on leaves.

The spots on your plant may be due to overwatering. Let the soil completely dry between waterings. Overwatering is not contagious to other plants (unless they are being overwatered too), but insect pests and diseases can travel.
