Half parasite on Dog Roses

Question

Cleaning the dog roses I found what looks like a half parasite on the top of a stem. Really want to know what this is, the name and what causes this.

You would need to send a photo in to your local College or University to their Horticultural Lab. There is no way I can say without some sort of photo or two, or perhaps three!
