Q.Growing Butterfly Vines

Zone 27265 | Ron Newberry added on February 8, 2025 | Answered

I read your article on “Tips On Growing Butterfly Vines”. I have some seeds. I live in zone 7-7A. How is the best way to grow the vine from seeds and in my zone would it be considered an annual? Thanks, Ron

Butterfly vine seeds need a little scarification—rub them with sandpaper or nick them with a knife—then soak them overnight. Plant in well-draining soil after the last frost, in full sun. In zone 7-7A, it might die back in winter but can return in spring if mulched well. Treat it as a perennial with some winter protection or an annual if you don’t want the hassle. Fast grower, loves heat—should thrive!
