Q.Ground clearance

sepaterson added on July 30, 2012 | Answered

I have a small patch of ground at the side of my house that is overgrown with weeds with some reaching above waist height. I would like to clear the ground of all the weeds permanently so I can, in time, plant a barrier of trees. Can anyone suggest a permanent way of clearing the weeds as I have tried weed killers from the local garden centre, which are costly and don’t work.

Laying a tarp or a thick, dark sheet of plastic down over the area and weighing down the edges will kill the weeds and keep them away until you want to plant. Then, as you plant your trees, remove the tarp from the area you are planting, plant the tree and mulch heavily around the tree to keep weeds from regrowing after you plant.
