Growth and care for my miniature leaf Schefflera

Question

I’ve had the plant for many years and try to prune it to become thick, and to look more like a small tree. The trunk is the same thickness it was years ago. Photo attached. Any suggestions?

I suggest a houseplant fertilizer, but I think the more important action may be to do more trimming.
