good year round planter tree

Question

I just moved into a new apartment in Oakland, Ca and I have a large patio that I want to put trees on that will survive in planters. I am looking for trees that when you buy them are at least 5 feet tall and will get no bigger than 8 feet tall, will provide some shade and privacy and can be left outside all year round and are somewhat low maintenance.
