Q.gladioli have pods where the flower was

Gladiola have flowered and where the flower has died, I have a green pod (quite large) appearing. What is this and what can I do with it?

These are the seed pods of the Gladiola.
They can be collected after they have dried and turned brown.
Cut open the pod and shade the seeds into a paper towel, fold the seeds into the towel and place in a sealed plastic bag.
Store in a cool area, 40 degrees F. until February.
