Q.Gardenia Bud Drop

My gardenia plant has not been moved and both watering and light conditions have remained constant. It has been developing buds for three months. They were just about to show some white. There are about 100 buds-it is a large standard. All of a sudden they are falling off. The base of the buds is black. Does anyone know what the problem is? I suspect a fungus.  Is there anything I can do?

I would recommend using neem oil to treat them. We have found it to be effective against pests like this. Here is more information on that:
