Gardenia Blossoms

Question

I have two mature gardenia bushes. I have rarely trimmed them because I have always been afraid of trimming the blossoms of my favorite flower. My flowers are very sparce and I see other neighboring gardenia bushes full of blooms. It is the middle of August, what should I do to ensure that I will get lots of blossoms next year? I love the scent of the gardenias, which are around my porch, and I would like more blooms.
