Sounds like a great project.
You would need to make some determinations for you space. Perennials or annuals? Sun or shade location? Soil content, heights of plants. Weather conditions--windy, sheltered?

I would invite you to read some links I'm listing.

Visit some local garden centers and shop for plants available for your growing conditions.
Is there a local garden club in your area? Members are usually very willing to help a new gardener.

Best of luck.
