First flower garden soil prep

Question

Hi,
I live in Zone 8 – Dallas, TX. I want to start a flower garden (my first one EVER) and I have zero knowledge. I want to start by planting some Lavender Rhododendron or Lavender Azaleas. Can you tell me what I need to do to prep the soil? This a new house and there was once a flower garden but not for at least a few years.
