Q.Failing Clematis

Last year we planted a clematis in a container to grow up against a trellised fence. Initially it was OK but after a week or so the leaves started to turn brown and the flowers shrivel. We had planted it around July time. We left it there until this year, when it began to grow quite vigorously with lots of flowers. However after a few weeks it again started to fail with shrivelling leaves and withering flowers. It now looks almost dead. Photos are attached. What is going wrong?

Make sure it isn't over or underwatered. It may be getting a fungal infection after it gets going each year, possibly clematis wilt. Here is more:
