Q.Dwarf weeping pussy willow

Anonymous added on July 19, 2015 | Answered

My dwarf weeping pussy willow stopped “weeping. ” All branches for the last two years have grown straight UP, and never bend. I’ve had to cut them off at 7 feet because of homeowner association rules (plantings can’t extend over fence tops). The tree is about six years old. Is it hopeless? Time to dig it out and start over? Thanks.

A previous pruning may have removed the weeping branches of the plant. The weeping comes from grafts and once the grafted weeping branches are damaged or pruned back to severely, the natural upright branches return. The long and short of it is that your weeping pussy willow will not weep again. If this is the desired shape you want to the plant, you will need to replace it.
