Q.Double Trunk Magnolia – Normal?

Someone gave me this magnolia. It was growing wild in their yard before they transplanted to a pot. Is it normal for it to have a double trunk like this? (Not sure if it will weaken the tree?). Should I try to separate them? Thanks

It is not typical, but that smaller one does not seem to have been pruned, mistakenly, as the larger trunk. They tend to do better without topping, so if you do remove one, you might consider removing the side that has NOT been topped. Here are some articles that will help you with the care of your tree:
