Do Purple Plum Trees Need Pruning?

The Purple Plum that was planted in front of our new home 8 years ago seems to be getting out of control. With its growth, it seems to be too close to the house and the branches extend out over the driveway. Can you tell the difference between Purple Plums that are to stay 15 feet approximately versus the larger specimen? Perhaps, the wrong type of tree was planted.
