Q.*Delphiniums and Squirrels*

Zone 28630 | Nola added on February 25, 2018 | Answered

How do you keep the Squirrels from eating your Delphiniums? As soon as my Delphiniums get a chute or two and reach three or four inches in height the Squirrels eat it down to the ground. I thought it was a poisonous plant so also wondering why the Squirrels would eat it and if it makes them sick, it doesn’t seem to have any effect on them as they keep coming back for more. I put the two that I have left in a flower pot and placed it on our patio but they don’t get enough sun light. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You will have to play hardball here. Most mammals are deterred by hot peppers. I would recommend boiling sliced peppers in water, and after it cools you can spray the plants and soil with it. They will not touch them until it needs reapplication.
